09 April 2009 Extra training 'may cut van insurance claims'

Rospa: Youngsters who drive for a living need extra training Providing additional training to young people who drive for a living could prevent accidents and van insurance claims, it has been suggested.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa), some novice motorists are ill-prepared when they take on a role that involves them getting behind the wheel.

Research by the group found 60 per cent of bosses share this concern for employees aged between 17 and 24.

They were worried the standard driving test on its own is not sufficient preparation for people who will be driving as part of their jobs.

Rospa's road safety manager, Duncan Vernon, claimed there was a definite training gap in this area.

He explained: "Young workers are being required to drive vehicles … in conditions and situations in which they have limited - if any - prior experience."

In related news, Rospa previously announced it will be holding its Practical Transport Solutions conference at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel next month.
