For every three people taking out van insurance in the UK after buying a new vehicle last month, one is likely to have been a Ford owner, it has been suggested.

Statistics provided by the manufacturer revealed it was responsible for a third of all the commercial motor sales during March.

The group claimed a 28.8 per cent market share after shifting a total of 10,136 vans.

According to the company's records, this is the highest monthly proportion of sector sales it has achieved in more than eight years.

Spokesman Steve Kimber commented: "It is further proof that, especially in the current climate, operating costs are at the fore of everyone's mind."

He added Ford was catering to the needs of cash-strapped businesses by providing reliable and economical vans.

Overall last month, UK commercial vehicle registrations were down 40 per cent.
