07 April 2009 Police in Newry investigating criminal damage to cars

Police investigating incident during which six cars were vandalised Motorists in a certain area of Northern Ireland may want to put extra security measures in place if they want to avoid a car insurance claim.

Police in Newry have revealed they are investigating a spate of incidents during which vehicles in Barcroft Park were damaged.

Officers were called to the area at about 04:15 BST on April 5th after reports of a car fire.

When they arrived, the police found a number of other motors had been targeted, with paintwork scored and windscreens smashed.

In total, six cars were damaged.

Last month, Assistant Chief Constable Finlay, environment minister Sammy Wilson and criminal justice minister Paul Goggins announced new legislation in Northern Ireland, which give members of the police force the power to seize vehicles without car insurance and those causing annoyance, alarm or distress to members of the public.

It was claimed the new measures would target the kind of motorists likely to commit a range of driving offences.
