06 April 2009 Following police advice could prevent a claim

Householders urged to shut doors and windows in unoccupied rooms As the weather starts to get warmer, people keen to avoid a home insurance claim may do well to follow advice from Tayside Police.

The force pointed out residents are more likely to leave doors and windows open during summer months in a bid to ventilate their houses.

However, it explained this could be a costly mistake if an opportunist burglar happens to pass by.

Officers advised householders to only leave doors and windows open if they are in the room in question.

They also recommended people shut all such potential entry points at night.

In addition to this, it was suggested residents activate their alarms when leaving their properties empty and before heading up to bed in the evening.

Earlier this year, Tayside police issued a warning to householders in Arbroath after a spate of shed break-ins across the area.

Officers claimed planting thorny shrubbery could act as a deterrent to potential burglars considering jumping over a fence and stealing items.
