Drivers in West Yorkshire who do not want to jeopardise their cheap comprehensive car insurance premiums may be well advised to keep an eye on their speedometer.

The Tong and Wyke Neighbourhood Policing Team explained it is responding to concerns from local residents about road safety issues in the area by launching a crackdown on drivers who are caught travelling too quickly.

Sergeant Paul Wharton - who has organised this week's speedwatch campaign - said officers are keen to warn offenders about the potentially devastating consequences of their actions.

He added the team had made a conscious decision to let motorists know about the initiative up front.

"We are choosing to tell people about this speedwatch because we would rather prevent motorists from speeding in the first place than have to stop them and prosecute them," Sergeant Wharton explained.

Drivers who receive a motoring conviction for speeding may lose access to cheap comprehensive car insurance.
