01 April 2009 New rules may be welcomed by third party insurance holders
Third party car insurance customers - who appreciate any measures implemented in order to improve road safety and reduce the likelihood of accidents - may welcome some new rules that have just come into force. From today, drivers who are resident outside the UK will face the same penalties for breaking the law behind the wheel as motorists who live in Britain.
Police and members of the Vehicle Operator and Services Agency are now able to hand out on-the-spot fines to offenders who are unable to provide an address in this country that officials are happy with.
Furthermore, it will be possible for foreign motorists to have their British record endorsed with penalty points and they could even be banned from driving in the UK.
Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick explained the motivation behind the new rules.
"We want to keep our roads as safe as possible," he said.
Earlier this year, the Department for Transport announced plans to make it more difficult for people to get away with driving without car insurance.
