01 April 2009 Fiat models may appeal to green drivers

Fiat's eco:Drive system Motorists who make the effort to only take out car insurance for environmentally-friendly vehicles may be inspired to consider a model from Fiat after the company's green credentials received recognition recently.

At the MediaGuardian Innovation Awards, the manufacturer's eco:Drive system clinched top spot in the digital technology category.

The gadget, which is designed to help motorists reduce their CO2 emissions, was launched last year at the Paris motor show.

Since then, it has received the backing of supermodel Jodie Kidd who tried it out in a Fiat 500.

Users plug a USB stick into the dashboard of their car and while they drive their style is analysed.

This information can be downloaded onto a computer and the motorist is offered advice on how changing their habits behind the wheel could reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

"It's the first time that an automotive brand has launched an interactive technology that helps its customers improve their style of driving in order to help preserve the environment," Claudio Annicchiarico from Fiat claimed.

Motorists looking for car insurance for an eco-friendly car may be able to secure a good deal online.
