Due to arrive in showrooms across the UK in June, the diesel-powered GTD was described as being similar in appearance to the GTI.

Volkswagen explained the vehicle has the same badge style, front-end design and honeycomb grille as its sister model, as well as 17-inch alloy wheels.

The car offers average fuel consumption of 53.3 mpg and CO2 emissions of less than 140 g/km.

Meanwhile, the vehicle's top speed is 136 mph and it is capable of accelerating from zero to 62 mph in just over eight seconds.

The GTD is available to order immediately and prices for the entry-level model are expected to be under £22,000.
