27 March 2009 MOT service 'could stop drivers invalidating their insurance'

Kwik-Fit: Six million motorists in the UK have forgotten about their MOT Motorists who have previously forgotten their MOT test was due may welcome the introduction of a new service that could help prevent them invalidating their car insurance.

Kwik-Fit has announced it is offering to send its customers email reminders when their certificate is about to expire.

It explained it was doing this after conducting research that revealed some six million motorists in the UK have driven in a technically illegal vehicle because they did not realise their MOT test was overdue.

Drivers who take to the road without a valid certificate are compromising their insurance and may find their provider refuses to pay out in the event of an accident.

Kwik-Fit's customer services director David White said: "Forgetting to MOT your car may seem like a minor oversight but it's a widespread problem that can have serious consequences."

Last month, the firm warned drivers that people who go downhill in neutral to save money on petrol are risking an accident and subsequent car insurance claim.
