27 March 2009 Van owners 'need to readjust to driving in the dark'

IAM: It may take a few weeks to readjust to driving in the dark Motorists keen to protect their cheap van insurance premiums may want to heed advice from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

The group has reminded drivers the clocks go forward this Sunday and as a result many of them will be making their commute to work in the dark next week.

It warned after getting used to setting off in daylight, this change may cause problems.

The organisation explained taking to the road before the sun has come up means drivers have to deal with reduced visibility and this can increase the likelihood of accidents.

Neil Greig, director of IAM policy and research, suggested: "For the first few weeks of the clock change, motorists will need to get used to driving in darker conditions and take extra care."

Drivers who follow this advice may increase their chances of successfully protecting the no-claims bonus on their van insurance policy, so that they can benefit from cheaper cover next year.
