25 March 2009 Write-offs 'are not always dangerous'
People looking at buying second-hand motors may find vehicles that have been written-off by car insurance companies are still safe, it has been claimed. However, auto information group HPI explained this will depend what category of write-off the model in question falls under.
Cars that are still safe to drive will be listed as class C or D, it explained, adding those that were labelled A or B should be avoided at all costs as they should have been crushed and taken out of circulation.
Figures from HPI show that about a quarter of all motor insurance claims result in a vehicle being written-off.
The group pointed out it conducts checks that will reveal the history of a second-hand car, so that motorists can avoid buying a dangerous auto.
Motorists who do not pay very much for a used model may find third party insurance is a more cost-effective option than comprehensive cover.
