Women drivers looking to downsize in a bid to cut the cost of their female car insurance may want to consider the new award-winning Ford Fiesta.

The model recently received a Red Dot award from the Design Zentrum Norhrhein Westfalen in Germany - one of the biggest design recognition schemes in the world.

Products entered in the 2009 event were assessed against a number of criteria, including quality, functionality and innovation.

Some 3,231 items were considered across 17 categories from 49 countries and the Fiesta was picked out for its outstanding design.

Martin Smith from Ford said this type of award is particularly important to the manufacturer.

"Research shows that whether they are in Milan, Beijing or New York, customers put style at the top of their list," he pointed out.

Ladies who buy the Ford Fiesta may find they qualify for cheap car insurance as a result of the model's comparatively small engine size.
