23 March 2009 AA calls for fuel duty to be frozen
Vehicle owners who are already struggling to meet running costs such as van insurance, road tax and maintenance may back calls for fuel duty to be frozen. The AA has suggested it is not fair on businesses or families for the tax to be increased under the current economic circumstances.
It made this claim amid numerous reports that the government intends to raise fuel duty by two pence from the beginning of April.
Originally, this increase was due to be introduced last October but it was postponed as a result of the global economic downturn.
Paul Watters, head of public affairs at the AA, said petrol and diesel is a necessity not a luxury and it should be affordable for everyone.
"There are some that say high prices do the environment good, but the problem is that high prices don't do families good, they don't do businesses good," he stated.
Drivers may be able to reduce running costs by searching for cheap van insurance online.
