19 March 2009 Kids crack down on speeding motorists
Children in Leeds have been reminding motorists that they could be risking a car insurance claim by speeding.Pupils from Robin Hood Junior and Infant School have been working with police to wipe the smiles off the faces of drivers who break the limit.
The kids have been using a smiley speed camera to measure how fast cars are passing their playground.
Motorists who drive at or under the 40 mph speed limit receive a smiley face from the electronic device.
However, those who are travelling too quickly are flashed a frown.
Police Community Support Officer Nico Sto Tomas said: "Using the smiley speed camera is a fun and interesting way to teach local young people about the dangers of speeding, particularly outside our schools."
He added seeing kids at the side of the road may remind motorists how serious the consequences of travelling too fast can be.
Motorists who receive a conviction for speeding may find they struggle to secure cheap comprehensive insurance in the future.
