13 March 2009 Motoring group's comments may reassure third party insurance holders

Lights will only be switched off on safe sections of motorway Third party insurance customers who are aware just how expensive an accident can be may welcome reassurances that plans to switch off motorway lighting will not be dangerous.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), it was initially concerned by the proposals put forward by the Highways Agency (HA) to reduce its carbon footprint.

However, the group said it had been convinced the government organisation would implement the measures in a sensible way.

It also pointed out the programme would not be rolled out to include A-class dual and single carriageways where lighting was vital at night.

Director of policy and research Neil Greig stated: "The HA has struck the right balance by continuing to illuminate junctions and opting for low-flow routes with a good road safety record."

Third party insurance holders may be well-advised to take extra care when driving at night, as if they cause an accident they will probably have to pay for any damage to their own vehicle.
