12 March 2009 Vehicles 'getting greener'

SMMT: Proportion of CO2 produced by cars in the UK has fallen Car insurance customers keen to replace their current motor with a greener model may find they are spoilt for choice, if new figures are anything to go by.

Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed the average carbon dioxide emissions from new vehicles fell more quickly in 2008 than ever before.

A typical car built last year releases 158 g/km – a drop of 4.2 per cent compared with those produced in 2007.

SMMT also pointed out vehicles now account for less of the UK's overall carbon dioxide emissions.

Although there are more cars on the road and they are covering greater distances, autos are now responsible for less than 12 per cent of the total amount of the gas released.

Chief executive of SMMT Paul Everitt stated: "The motor industry has made enormous progress in its work to cut the environmental impact of its products."

Previous figures from the organisation revealed year-on-year new car sales fell by more than a fifth in February.
