10 March 2009 New speed limit 'may not be best way to cut car insurance claims'

ABD: It is not necessary to reduce speed limit on all rural roads Making motorists drive slower on all rural single carriageways is not the best way to reduce accidents and car insurance claims, it has been argued.

According to the Association of British Drivers (ABD), a government proposal to introduce a 50 mph speed limit on all such routes in the countryside is a bad idea.

It stated people in positions of power should be concentrating on building safer roads and improving the skills of motorists.

The group welcomed the fact there would be a public consultation before such measures were given the go-ahead.

Nigel Humphries from ABD said: "A blanket 50 mph speed limit does not recognise that roads vary enormously in character and that a limit as low as 50 is totally unnecessary on many rural roads."

In the past, the organisation has suggested Spain's attitude to improving safety for motorists by designing better driving networks should be adopted in the UK.
