09 March 2009 MOT reminders may prevent car insurance claims
Sending MOT reminders could help prevent people driving potentially unsafe vehicles, possibly reducing the likelihood of car insurance claims, it has been suggested.According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), it is easy to forget when a certificate is due for renewal and get behind the wheel of a technically illegal auto.
It stated recent increases in MOT charges should be used to fund an initiative to send out reminder letters.
Neil Greig, IAM director of policy and research said: "Motorists have faced constant test fee increases for the past five years, each one above inflation, but they have not seen much improvement in the service."
Previous research by the group found 71 per cent of drivers would support such a scheme, with 32 per cent admitting there had been an occasion where they had inadvertently taken to the road after their MOT certificate had expired.
Motorists who drive without up-to-date documentation may find they invalidate their comprehensive or third party insurance.
