05 March 2009 Van insurance customers 'reluctant to buy new vehicles'

SMMT: Government needs to help van manufacturers The number of people taking out van insurance after buying new vehicles may have fallen last month, if recent figures are anything to go by.

Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) revealed registrations were down 20 per cent for the rolling year and 58 per cent compared with the same month in 2008.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said the commercial vehicle business is struggling as a result of the economic downturn.

He stated: "These are unique circumstances in which the government must help.

"We need direct, positive action to give people the confidence to buy now."

Mr Everitt added this intervention needs to come as soon as possible, if manufacturers are to make it through the recession intact.

Last month, SMMT, the Vehicle Certification Agency and the Department for Transport released a guide called Right Van Man.

The publication offers light commercial vehicle buyers tips on cutting CO2 emissions.
