02 March 2009 Campaign could cut home insurance claims

Residents urged to lock windows An initiative by Surrey police may see a drop in crime-related home insurance claims in the area.

The force announced it will be spending a week focusing on how to cut burglary rates in the county.

It stated although it is not currently a major problem in the area, as the weather improves and people start leaving windows open more regularly, opportunities for thieves will begin to increase.

Before this happens, officers were keen to visit as many residents as possible to offer crime prevention advice.

Householders are being reminded to lock windows and doors, secure gates and fences and keep any valuables out of sight of prying eyes.

Detective Chief Superintendent Kevin Deanus stated: "Burglary is, on the whole, an opportunistic crime.

"If thieves are scouting for potential targets and see an easy access point to your home, they will take advantage of it."

A list of tips from Surrey police on how to deter burglars suggested residents use timer devices on lights when their house is left empty.
