Female car insurance customers may get a gift they were not expecting this Mothering Sunday, it has been suggested.

According to DVLA Personalised Registrations, private plates are becoming an increasingly popular choice among people searching for special presents.

Statistics provided by the group revealed that over the last four months, 46 per cent of the buyers who purchased such an item did not intend to keep it for themselves.

It claimed private plates are particular favourites among people looking for Christmas and birthday presents - and also do well around Mother's Day, Father's Day and Valentine's Day.

DVLA Personalised Registrations marketing manager Damian Lawson stated: "They fall into the rare gift-for-life category and, with prices starting from £245, they're great value."

Plates that are currently available and may be well-received on Mother's Day include MY08 MUM and MY02 MUM.
