26 February 2009 Police hand out 19 seatbelt fines

Belt up: Motorists reminded about the importance of seatbelts Drivers in Bradford have been advised to belt up because, if they do not, the loss of cheap comprehensive car insurance premiums may be the least of their problems.

Police in Bradford organised a three-day initiative recently designed to remind motorists of the importance of wearing seatbelts.

Operation Salter saw 19 people handed £30 fines for failing to do just that.

A number of other motorists found themselves in hot water for using their mobile phones behind the wheel and one person had their vehicle seized because they had no insurance.

Commenting on the crackdown on people not wearing seatbelts, Inspector Esther Hobbs said the police were determined to do all they could to keep drivers in Bradford safe.

She stated: "The least that can happen is we will catch up with you and give you a fixed penalty notice, but the worst that can happen is that you or your passengers could die."

People who receive motoring convictions may find the cost of their comprehensive car insurance increases.
