26 February 2009 Hard-up drivers going "too far"

Motorists warned against eco-coasting Some motorists desperate to save money as the recession tightens its grip on the UK could be jeopardising their cheap comprehensive car insurance, it has been claimed.

Kwik-Fit has uncovered a worrying new phenomenon, where hard-up drivers put vehicles into neutral when going downhill in a bid to save money at the pump.

Research by the company found 15 per cent of road users are indulging in this practice.

It described the trend as dangerous - as a motor that is out of gear is out of control and could very easily end up crashing into the vehicle in front.

The firm also claimed any pennies saved on petrol would more than likely be required to pay for the additional wear and tear on brakes.

Customer services director David White said: "Eco-coasting is clearly on the rise as millions of motorists look to save money on their fuel bills, but the associated dangers make it a money-saving step too far."

Motorists who cause a crash in this manner may find the cost of their comprehensive car insurance rises significantly.
