26 February 2009 Van drivers 'must check tyres'

Treading dangerously: Motorists urged to check tyres Drivers who try and cut costs by skimping on tyre maintenance could be risking a van insurance claim, it has been reported.

According to TyreSafe, a growing number of motorists are attempting to save money by leaving longer intervals between changing tyres.

It stated people who do this increase the likelihood they will be involved in a collision.

Research by the group recently revealed one in ten motorists plan to cut back on tyre expenditure this year, but figures from the National Tyre Distributors Association highlight how dangerous this can be.

In January, the organisation examined 60,000 vehicles and 7,000 were found to have at least one tyre which fell below legal safety requirements.

Chairman Rob Beddis commented: "Drivers must re-evaluate their priorities and ensure that their tyres remain safe and legal."

Vehicle owners who fail to change old tyres may experience a loss of grip which could result in an accident.

They may then find they lose access to cheap van insurance.
