25 February 2009 Used car buyers 'need to be sceptical'

HPI: Used car buyers should be sceptical about low mileages People considering buying a second-hand vehicle that should only require third party car insurance have been offered advice on how to spot whether they are getting a bargain.

Auto information group HPI claimed motorists should be sceptical about models with surprisingly low mileages.

It stated the number on the odometer cannot always be trusted.

Drivers were urged to study service histories and think about whether the previous mileage recordings seem to match the condition of the car.

New rubber pedals can indicate an attempt to hide a vehicle's true past, HPI warned.

It suggested if a driver's seat is well-worn, that may be a more reliable clue to the number of miles covered by the motor in question.

The firm also said: "Excessive stone chips on the bonnet could indicate a car has done more miles than advertised."

If people pay less than £1,000 for a used vehicle, they may find third party insurance is a cost-effective option.
