24 February 2009 Hands-free kits 'could jeopardise cheap van insurance'
Businesses that allow their employees to use hands-free mobile phone kits while behind the wheel could see the cost of their van insurance rise, it has been suggested.RoadSafe has warned motorists are much more likely to be involved in accidents when distracted by telephone calls.
It pointed out a company director from the UK was recently convicted of careless driving after she was involved in a fatal accident while using a hands-free device.
Lynne-Marie Howden received a £2,000 fine and a 12-month ban.
RoadSafe claimed companies should ban their workers from holding any kind of telephone conversation while behind the wheel.
While passing sentence on Ms Howden, Judge Richard Griffiths-Jones said: "What happened to you in this case is a lesson to us all about the dangers of talking while we drive."
Companies with employees who receive a motoring conviction for careless driving may find they have to shell out more for van insurance.
