23 February 2009 'More needs to be done to protect young drivers'
Newly-qualified drivers who have opted for third party insurance may welcome calls for more to be done to prevent youngsters from being involved in road traffic collisions. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) has urged the government to look at reforming teaching and testing methods in a bid to cut the number of crashes involving inexperienced motorists.
Figures provided by the group revealed one in five people have an accident within six months of passing their test.
They also showed there has been little change in the number of young motorists killed behind the wheel since the mid-1990s.
Rospa's 74th Road Safety Congress is due to get underway in Blackpool today.
Kevin Clinton from the organisation pointed out the latest raft of policies put into place to protect young motorists is due to reach target deadlines soon.
He stated: "It is exactly the right time to reflect on what measures have been effective and how they can best be targeted and delivered."
Opting for third party insurance may be the cheaper option for young motorists.
However, if they are involved in an accident, they may have to shell out for any repairs to their own vehicle.
