20 February 2009 Simpler safety system introduced
Third party car insurance customers who realise how expensive an accident can be may welcome moves to simplify the vehicle safety rating system.Euro Ncap has recently completed the first round of crash tests where scores were measured using the revised method.
Instead of receiving three separate marks, cars are now given one overall rating.
Vehicles can be awarded from one to five stars.
The score takes into account the safety afforded to child and adult occupants, as well as the protection offered to pedestrians.
Six models have been tested under the new system so far.
The Toyota Avensis, Toyota iQ, Mazda6 and Mitsubishi Lancer received a maximum five-star rating, while the Subaru Impreza and Citroen C3 Picasso were awarded four stars.
Euro Ncap revealed it was changing its assessment method last year.
It explained it was doing this to encourage carmakers to place more emphasis on pedestrian safety.
Third party insurance customers who are involved in an accident may find they have to shell out for any damage to their own vehicle.
