20 February 2009 Safety system may benefit car insurance customers
Vehicle buyers who do not want to jeopardise their cheap comprehensivecar insurance cover may be well-advised to opt for a model with the Electronic Stability Program (ESP).Bosch - the firm responsible for the technology - said the system can help prevent motorists losing control while on the road.
It claimed 80 per cent of skidding collisions could be avoided in cars fitted with the device.
The company said the number of manufacturers fitting their vehicles with ESP was encouraging.
However, it stated the small car sector was lagging behind.
Figures from Bosch showed 56 per cent of new models bought in the UK during the first six months of 2008 were equipped with the technology.
Werner Struth from Bosch commented: "Buyers should ... be sure to ask for the safety system as an optional feature if it is not already on board as standard equipment."
People who opt for vehicles with this type of technology may see the cost of their comprehensivemotor insurance fall.
