20 February 2009 Weather-related home insurance claims 'easier to assess'
Assessing weather-related home insurance claims may be easier in future thanks to a service being offered by the Met Office, it has been suggested. The organisation stated its ClaimCheck programme provides companies with detailed information on what conditions were like in postcodes across the UK at any given time.
In the past, firms checking out the validity of home insurance claims relied on limited numbers of observations.
Using these, businesses would then estimate what the weather was like when the damage to a property reportedly took place.
Cathy Durston, head of consulting at the Met Office, said: "ClaimCheck plugs the gaps in weather reports, providing insurers with the same quality information as used by our forecasters."
It has been predicted companies using the initiative will be able to offer a quicker and fairer service to their customers.
Earlier this winter, it was revealed the Met Office had teamed up with the Department for Work and Pensions to ensure vulnerable members of society were well-prepared for sub-zero temperatures.
