Newly-qualified motorists looking to secure the cheapest comprehensive car insurance quote possible may be well-advised to opt for a small vehicle.

According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), inexperienced motorists are less likely to be involved in an accident in a diminutive model, which means they can quickly start building up their no claims bonus.

In addition to this, vehicles with smaller engines generally qualify for cheaper car insurance in the first place.

Biba said it always tries to encourage younger road users to go for less powerful models.

Peter Staddon, head of technical services, stated: "If you're learning to driver you don't need a powerful car, you need to understand the road."

He added people who have recently passed their test need not worry they will be priced out of the insurance market.
