12 February 2009 Checking tyres could prevent a breakdown
Motorists who do not want to end up relying on their car insurancebreakdown cover in the coming weeks may want to check their tyres, it has been suggested.Protyre warned the kind of bad weather the UK has seen recently can play havoc with these car parts.
It explained snow increases the likelihood motorists will damage their tyres by hitting potholes and kerbs.
The company also pointed out drivers who end up skidding on ice will not do their wheels any favours either.
Vehicle owners were advised to take a look at their tyres to check for premature ageing.
Motorists who are not confident about recognising signs of damage were encouraged to consult a professional.
Protyre is currently offering free tyre checks.
For drivers who want to reduce their chances of requiring roadside assistance, the company previously recommended replacing tyres as soon as tread depth drops to less than 3 mm.
