10 February 2009 Van insurance holders 'need to concentrate on the road'
Drivers who do not want to put their cheap van insurance cover at risk should avoid the temptation to chat on their mobiles while on the road, it has been suggested. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) warned taking a call while on the move significantly increases the likelihood of a motorist being involved in a crash.
It explained even hands-free kits did not remove the danger.
The charity claimed people who engage in a telephone conversation while driving - whether using a handset or not - are four times more likely to be involved in a collision.
Using a mobile to send a text was highlighted as an even bigger risk, as motorists have to take their eyes off the road.
Rospa spokeswoman Jo Stagg said: "People are sadly being killed in phone-related crashes."
She stated at least 25 deaths on UK roads in 2007 involved drivers using mobile phones.
