05 February 2009 Modifications 'could make car insurance more expensive'

ABI: Drivers should think carefully about modifications Motorists who do not want to see the cost of their comprehensive car insurance rise may be well-advised to avoid certain modifications, it has been suggested.

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), changes to a vehicle which make it more likely to be stolen, a higher accident risk or more expensive to repair could result in increased premiums.

It pointed out drivers who do decide to go ahead with modifications should ensure they let their car insurance provider know.

The group explained failing to do this can invalidate a policy.

Drivers planning to carry out their own changes have also been urged to be cautious.

ABI spokesperson Malcolm Tarling said: "While I am not an expert on car mechanics, people should not attempt any modifications unless they know what they are doing."

Despite these warning regarding vehicle modifications, changes which improve a model's security could result in the cost of insurance falling.
