05 February 2009 Being green 'can lead to cheaper car insurance'
Environmentally-friendly drivers may find they qualify for cheap car insurance, it has been reported.According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), many of the habits which motorists adopt to help the planet can also cut the cost of cover.
It explained opting for a vehicle with a smaller engine reduces CO2 emissions and often means drivers are eligible for less expensive motor insurance.
The group added those people who restrict their use of the car should also see the cost of their premiums fall.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive with Biba, pointed out motorists can enjoy these benefits without having to opt for a policy designed specifically for environmentally-friendly drivers.
He added some so-called green insurance can even prove more expensive.
"The green thing can sometimes be slightly misinterpreted and companies are using the green term to attract people with that particular conscience," Mr Trudgill stated.
Biba is an organisation which looks after the interests of the UK insurance industry.
