Accident Exchange stated it is thought there will be some 30,000 claims made in relation to collisions which occurred on February 2nd, compared with the 10,000 made on a typical winter's day in the UK.

The company predicted the repair bill would come to around £60 million.

It also pointed out a further £5.25 million was likely to be lost as the result of motorists taking time off work to sort out the damage to their cars.

Steve Evans, chief executive of Accident Exchange, said the vast majority of the problems were caused by the fact Brits are unaccustomed to getting behind the wheel in snowy conditions.

He insisted: "Driver inexperience is to blame with people coming across marooned cars and hitting them, driving too fast or too close to the car in front."
