Motorists who do not want to end up relying on their car insurancebreakdown cover would do well to conduct routine checks, it has been claimed.According to Haynes, by carrying out routine maintenance, drivers can ensure vehicles are as reliable as possible and reduce their chances of becoming stranded at the roadside.
The publisher suggested its car manuals could help people get into the habit of looking after their motors.
It claimed the guides - which are available for over 500 different vehicles - are "renowned for teaching millions of car owners how to carry out routine maintenance and repairs".
The group explained each task in the book has a difficulty rating of between one and five spanners.
It insisted even people with very little experience of car maintenance should be able to manage single-spanner jobs.
Earlier this year, Haynes predicted the economic downturn would lead to more motorists carrying out their own repairs.
