03 February 2009 Advice may help third party insurance holders

Motorists advised on how to avoid accidents on icy roads Motorists with third party car insurance who are keen to avoid an accident in the current sub-zero conditions may do well to pay heed to some recent advice.

Protyre has claimed when roads are icy or snowy drivers need to use a skilful and gentle touch.

It advised motorists driving in as high a gear as possible could help prevent unnecessary wheelspin.

Similarly, the company also recommended anyone who finds themselves stuck in ice or snow should resist the urge to spin wheels excessively, as this can damage or burst tyres.

Meanwhile, people who find themselves going into a slide were told it is better to keep off the brake, accelerator and clutch until control of the vehicle has been regained.

In addition, Protyre urged motorists to remain particularly alert while the weather is bad, adding it is important drivers give other road users more space than usual.

Drivers with third party insurance may be particularly keen to avoid causing an accident, as they would not be covered for any damage to their own vehicle.
