02 February 2009 Home insurance claims 'could have been avoided'

Police in Dundee urge residents to think about home security A number of residents in Dundee who may currently be facing home insurance claims as the result of being burgled could have saved themselves the inconvenience of having to make a claim, it has been suggested.

Figures from Tayside police revealed 25 properties were broken into across the city during the past week.

Officers pointed out the majority of these crimes occurred after dark when it was obvious no-one was at home.

Following the break-ins, police have reiterated their message that "a house in darkness is a house at risk".

Commenting on the recent burglaries, Constable Colin Brough said: "It is extremely disappointing and frustrating that we are still seeing avoidable crime being committed in the city."

He went on to urge householders to seriously consider whether their home security needs improving.

Earlier this year, Tayside police encouraged residents in Dundee to think about how they could make it harder for criminals to get into their sheds and garages.
