29 January 2009 Unnecessary car repairs 'on the increase'
Car insurance customers could be paying more than they have to for repairs after a new report showed that unnecessary garage work is on the increase.According to Warranty Direct, the last six months have seen more cases where motorists are quoted for work that does not actually need doing.
Managing director of the organisation Duncan McClure Fisher said it was a "sad state of affairs".
Findings from the company discovered one case where a Peugeot was taken to a workshop and the owner was told its entire fuel system would need replacing, costing £2,895.76.
However, when an independent expert checked the car, it was found that a fuel filter was the only replacement required at a price of £131.71.
"This is a worrying development," added Mr McClure Fisher.
Those who want to check the small print of their car insurance or breakdown cover may want to take the opportunity to do so and find a new policy if necessary.
