Volkswagen's (VW's) Touran model has been named mini multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) of the year, it emerged this week.

BusinessCar magazine said it won the award for this category because it combines high levels of equipment with versatility and practicality.

Quality and efficiency were also highlighted, as well as the Touran's "rock-solid running costs".

Tristan Young is editor-in-chief of BusinessCar and said the MPV is likely to appeal to users thanks to its "great build quality".

"Volkswagen's Touran has spent several years proving itself to fleet managers and corporate users," he added.

The car is also available as part of VW's Bluemotion range, which offers reduced carbon emissions and a "highly-efficient" 1.9-litre TDI 105 PS engine.

In related news, the manufacturer announced last week that its motorsport team made history at the Dakar Rally in Argentina, obtaining the first "diesel-powered victory".
