28 January 2009 Bargain tyres 'can perform poorly'

Fitting the right tyres could be essential Drivers looking to reduce their car insurance premiums may want to mimimise the risk of accidents on wet roads by considering new tyres, according to a magazine.

Tests carried out by Autocar found bargain tyres sold by Wanli, Nankang, Triangle, GT Radial and Linglong did not perform as well as a premium tyre available from Continental.

A trial found a VW Golf fitted with Continental tyres - costing around £75 each - had the shortest stopping distance when braking at 50 mph on wet roads compared to the cheaper Chinese and Taiwanese imports.

Tyres from Linglong came last in the trial, slowing to 27.8 mph at the spot where the Continental-equipped car had stopped.

Senior tester Jamie Corstorphine said: "We expected the bargain tyres in this test to fall short of the Continental, but we were not prepared for just how poorly some performed."

According to TyreSafe, drivers should check their tyres' tread and pressure to help avoid accidents.
