23 January 2009 Police session could benefit car insurance holders

Motorists invited to have number plates secured Car insurance customers in West Yorkshire may be well-advised to take advantage of a scheme being run by police in the area.

Officers in Shipley are bringing back a registration plate security initiative next week to help protect motorists from vehicle-related fraud and crime.

The police are running a session where they will use specially-designed screws to fit plates to cars, in order to make it harder for thieves to remove them.

Commenting on the reasoning behind the initiative, officers explained stolen registrations can be fitted to other vehicles specifically so those cars can be used in criminal activity.

PC Steve Trudge said: "While it is not an excessive problem [in the area] it is one we are keen to tackle."

The security session will take place in St Peters Church car park, Shipley, on Sunday January 25th between 13:00 and 17:00 GMT.

Elsewhere in the county, police in Bingley said they were determined to keep up their campaign against speeding drivers, after 23 offenders were caught in one hour recently.
