22 January 2009 Campaign success 'good news for motor insurance holders'
The fact 9,000 drink-drivers were caught over the Christmas period is good news for car insurance customers keen to avoid a claim, it has been suggested.According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), this means the roads are now safer for law-abiding users.
It also claimed the figure demonstrates targeted enforcement campaigns work.
However, the group added authorities cannot afford to be complacent because an irresponsible minority continue to flout the law.
Neil Greig, IAM's director of research and policy, said: "We need more targeted enforcement all year round."
He stated: "Safety is for life - not just for Christmas."
Mr Greig went on to say he was disappointed by the rising number of young drink-drivers who were caught over the festive period.
In other news, IAM recently claimed Intelligent Speed Adaptation could be used to cut the number of traffic accidents in the UK, especially on rural roads.
