21 January 2009 Government gets tough on people without car insurance
People who persist in driving without car insurance may find it harder to get away with breaking the law in future, it has been claimed. The government revealed it intends to make changes to current legislation so that all vehicle owners are required to purchase cover.
Currently, it is only an offence to take to the road without insurance.
According to the government, the revised system is necessary in order to try and reduce the misery caused by people who refuse to buy cover.
Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick stated: "The selfish minority of drivers who refuse to insure their cars push up premiums for other motorists and kill or injure thousands of people each year."
When the updated regulations come into effect, people who fail to comply may receive a fine and could have their vehicles seized and destroyed.
The Association of British Insurers welcomed the new measures and called for them to be introduced without delay.
