21 January 2009 Drink-driving falls in Northern Ireland
The number of motorists in Northern Ireland jeopardising their cheap car insurance premiums by getting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol has fallen this winter, it has been announced.Police figures showed a 24 per cent drop in the number of detections, despite an increase breath tests.
Officers took 5,500 samples during this year's winter campaign and arrested 477 motorists for being over the limit.
Assistant Chief Constable Roy Toner said: "The detections in every district across Northern Ireland are thanks to the determined efforts of local police who were supported by Road Policing Command Units and Tactical Support Groups."
He added the people who were caught should be grateful they had been prevented from killing themselves or somebody else.
In other news from the force, a woman in her thirties died earlier this week after she struck a tree in her car in Downpatrick.
