20 January 2009 Car insurance customers will have to pay thousands for rare private plates

Highly-prized registration plate Drivers considering private plates after saving money on cheap car insurance may be surprised to find out just how expensive personalised registrations can be.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has placed a £10,000 reserve on 1 O - which is due to go under the hammer at a three-day sale at Whittlebury Hall in Northamptonshire starting on January 28th.

It stated the plate is expected to receive a lot of interest as it is a highly-prized example among many enthusiasts.

The organisation explained it is generally considered to be one of the last great personalised registrations still available in its 30 million-strong war chest.

DVLA marketing manager Damian Lawson commented: "We have set the highest reserve we've ever set on one of our auction plates, but one I am confident it will exceed."

Last year, the organisation made it possible for people to bid for private plates online.
