In addition to having good car insurance, in the event of an accident, drivers may be better off in a Citroen C6, it has been suggested.

According to New Car Net, the model came out as offering the best overall crash protection when assessed under the new Euro NCAP system.

The motoring website explained the revised test now gives vehicles an overall score rather than separate marks for different categories.

Euro NCAP stated it had changed the system in order to encourage manufacturers to put more effort into improving their pedestrian safety credentials.

With the revised criteria in place, New Car Net discovered some previously high-performing models received significantly lower ratings.

Massimo Pini from New Car Net stated: "What the points table shows is that several manufacturers still have work to do to if they’re going to get high scores in the future."

Last year, research by the website found drivers in London were least open to the idea of vehicles powered by alternative fuels.
