16 January 2009 Tyre checks 'could help skiers avoid a car insurance claim'

Cold weather tyres Skiers driving to European resorts this year may be well-advised to pay heed to advice from a road safety group if they want to avoid a car insurance claim.

TyreSafe has urged motorists to check their tyres before setting out, as conditions on routes leading to wintry destinations can be hazardous.

It stated having sufficient tread depth and properly inflated tyres is crucial in helping cars maintain grip.

Chairman Rob Beddis explained: "Driving in snowy mountain regions requires a good level of tread depth to maintain traction with the road and stay in control of the vehicle."

He added a car packed with ski equipment may also require more air in its tyres in order to support the increased load.

Taking these precautions could help reduce a motorist's chances of being in an accident and having to make a claim.

Meanwhile, holidaymakers may also find when driving on the continent their comprehensivecar insurance cover is automatically downgraded to third party.
