15 January 2009 'Secure doors or risk a home insurance claim'

Householders urged to lock doors properly Householders in Milton Keynes have been offered advice which could help them avoid a home insurance claim.

Thames Valley police are urging residents to ensure they secure their houses properly, after a number of letterbox and cat flap burglaries in the area.

Officers explained thieves have been using sticks, or similar objects, to reach through letterboxes or cat flaps and release catches on doors which have not been locked with a key.

Crime reduction agent Ed Allington stated a door is not adequately secured unless a key is used to double lock it.

He said: "It is imperative residents ensure they secure all the doors and windows securely including always dead-locking your doors."

Residents in the area were also advised to hide keys in a drawer once doors had been locked or take them upstairs with them when they retired for the evening.

In other news, Thames Valley police are warning people to be vigilant against bogus officials after an 85-year-old woman in Wokingham recently fell victim to a distraction burglary.
